  • How many hours would it take for someone working in the industry to make an animation like inspecting a piece of gear? Let´s asume he is rather young with not that much of work experience? I am an HR officer and would like to get some insight. I know this is highly depending on many other factors but a rough estimation would be a nice piece of info.

  • Bonus Tip #1: There are many more animation/artist jobs than just games and movies. Consider using those as stepping stones or as a way to make money until you land your dream job. I’m currently a 3D artist for a medical marketing company. It’s not video games and I have no medical background but it’s a great company and I’m learning a ton of skills every day from a wide variety of disciplines that I can apply to a future video game job.

Bonus Tip #2: Learn all you can outside of animation. The best creativity comes when you have more knowledge to draw from. Pun intended. You never know when something from history, science, cooking etc. might inspire a game idea. Consider getting a full bachelor’s degree instead of just an animation school. I went to a cheap university that had an ok animation program but I also took generals. I really value the additional knowledge I received.

Bonus Tip #3: Don’t place so much emphasis on your program. Just as tools don’t make you a great artist, ultimately it’s you and not the art program that will make you great. Art programs are great for giving you a spring board of knowledge but if you’re not taking the initiative and teaching yourself as well you’re gonna have a harder time excelling. Without exaggeration I would say over half of what I knew by the time I graduated I learned on my own. My professor’s tried to give me a simple concept to learn a skill but I was never satisfied with the assignment so I googled how to create the rig I needed in order to create the animation I envisioned which was way above the criteria for the assignment. I didn’t always finished because I was too ambitious but I learned more than I would if I just did the minimum. In the end it’s not about grades. It’s about your demo reel.

Bonus Tip #4: Google, google, google. You can’t keep up with a rapidly changing industry and you will frequently encounter things you don’t know how to do. While I do ask my fellow artist’s for suggestions, I google stuff every single day at work because I’ve either forgotten or don’t know how to do something. Of my classmates that dropped out of the program, they all had one thing in common. They didn’t know how to teach themselves.

  • This is EXCELLENT advice, especially the part about choosing a school based on their student's demo reels and making the best possible demo reel for yourself. This is so important that Sony Pictures Animation put out a compilation video of scenes from demo reels that show the things they look for. (Nine out of fourteen clips came from iAnimate.net students.)
